Miami University Projects
This project consisted of 3 main scopes of work: Landscaping, Irrigation, and Pavers/Site Features. All of these scopes had to be completed in conjunction with one another, leading to precise coordination between our sitework/landscape department and our irrigation department.
The Landscaping scope of the project started with the fine grading and rockhounding of the site around Dodds Hall to ready the subgrade for new properly
amended topsoil. We were then tasked with bringing in that amended topsoil that was the proper composition to encourage growth and health for the new flora. This new flora included the installation of large deciduous canopy trees, flowering ornamental trees, evergreen trees & shrubs for a pop of color in the winter, and many flowering perennials
and shrubs native to Ohio. These plants would serve as a key feature to the Dodds Hall landscape, providing shade and beauty for all the students in the area. In addition to the various flora, we were tasked with providing new grass sod for student walking and
activity use. There was one issue that arose with this portion of the project was where an underground steam pipe was leaking resulting in the killing of the portion of sod that ran along the pipe. Oheil had to provide the unfortunate news that if this pipe wasn’t
fixed that the grass around it would continue to perish.
The second scope of work for this project was the installation of a new Irrigation system to water the sod and plants installed for the landscape improvements. This was done during the grading and installation of the various walkways for many of the
irrigation pipes would have to be sleeved under these pipes in order to provide head to head coverage of the area. Irrigation systems have been our bread and butter since we were founded in 1981, so a system of this scale and significance was not out of the ordinary for our teams. Irrigation is very important to the maintenance of the landscape at Dodds Hall, for without it most of the landscape installed during this project would have perished creating additional cost and labor for our crew.
The stone walkways scope of work for this project was essential for new efficient transportation routes for students in this area of the campus. Our crew installed brick, permeable brick, and bluestone pavers to create the desired aesthetic walking paths
that Miami University Desired. The brick aesthetic is a critical part of the university’s architectural identity, and it was a privilege to contribute to that in the form of landscape paths. Work like this is always special because it ends up being something that gets
used by many people daily. Along with the paths we installed many site features such as benches and bike racks to provide needed amenities to the students of the residence hall.
Miami University Dodd’s Hall landscape improvements is a great example of Oheil Site Solutions capabilities with renovating a landscape and creating an atmosphere conducive to tranquility and efficiency for the students. This landscape is
one that will be experienced daily by so many people and is a true testament to the work that we do, by providing a different experience or meaning for the many different people who live in Dodds or that simply venture through/around this area of the campus.
